Along with the pedigrees printed in the catalog we supply more information in the boxes below each lot.
The following diagram explains what the information in each box means. The EPD’s listed are current as of the
time of the printing of this catalog. The Hereford Ass’n. updates these EPD’s twice yearly as more information
is reported on the sire and dam. The accuracies are low on young unproven animals but get higher as more
information on their progeny is reported. NOTE: EPD’s cannot be compared across breeds. For example a +10.0
Birth Weight EPD for Polled Herefords might give you less birth weight than a -5.0 for a Simmental sire. The
weights and measurements given to the AHA to compile this information was recorded honestly reported by
S&S. Nothing was guessed at or estimated. All this information is supplied to help you select cattle that fill
your needs. If you have questions, please call or ask.

Progeny of this bull are expected to be plus
or minus the pounds of weight for the trait shown.
EXAMPLE: A bull with a Weaning EPD of +12.1 is
expected to produce calves that are 12.1 pounds heavier
at weaning than a bull with a Weaning EPD of 0.0. The
accuracy (ACC) is also provided except on Maternal
Weaning Wt. This figure shows the percent of accuracy
for the EPD.

The milking ability of a bull’s daughter expressed
in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in
average weight of a bull’s daughter’s progeny due to
milking ability.

Milk and Growth reflects what the bull is expected to
transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth
genetics and genetics for milking ability through the time
the calf is weaned.

CEDCalving Ease Direct. An EPD showing an estimation
of a sires calves to be born unassisted. Example: A sire with
an EPD of +8 for calving ease is expected to have 8% more
calves born unassisted out of two year old cows than a sire
of 0%.

CEM Calving Ease Maternal. Reads the same as Box
13, only it is an EPD indication of a sires’ daughters to calve
unassisted.

Adjusted Backfat.

Fat thickness EPD. Plus indicates higher fat thickness
and minus indicates lower fat thickness.

Adjusted Rib Eye Area.

Rib eye area EPD. Plus indicates larger Rib eye area and
minus indicates smaller Rib eye area.

Marbling EPD. Plus indicates higher marbling and minus
