The Importance of Performance Information
Approximately 90% of the genetic progress in most commercial cattle
operations will come through the selection of superior bulls. Consequently, the
evaluation of potential herd sires is extremely important. In this light, it is
important to remember that performance testing a bull doesn’t change the
genetic makeup, but simply makes additional information available to assess
his true merit. In other words, the performance data presented on these bulls
should aid in the selection of a superior bull for economically important traits.
Explanation of Performance Information
205-DAY ADJ WT (ADJ WW):
Provides a measure of milking and mothering
ability of cows and growth potential in calves. It is computed by the following
formula:
Actual Weaning Wt. – Actual Birth Wt.
Weaning Age in Days
This adjustment puts an accurate representation of across bull comparison for
weaning weight.
365-DAY ADJ WT (ADJ. YW
): Provide a measure of growth rate of an animal
standardized to 1 year of age. Computed by the formula:
Actual Yr. Wt. – Actual Wean Wt
Difference Between Measures (days)
SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE
: Research has shown a relationship between
scrotal circumference and fertility, as well as onset of puberty. The values
expressed are in centimeters, and the measurements were taken at the end of
the test. These will be supplied on the supplement sheet. Standards for scrotal
circumference established by the Society for Theriogenology are shown in the
following table:
