Welcome to the 1st Annual Haugen Performance Horses Futurity Prospect and Per-
formance Horse Sale. I have always felt that it is my job to put the colts that go through my
program in a position to help them reach their potential. I think this mindset is what has helped
colts that have been through our program win in excess of $1,000,000 in Rodeo and Futurity
winnings. Most of the time when a colt would leave I would find myself wondering how good
they could’ve been if I could have had them in training for another 3-6 months. The majority
of colts I start are in training with me for 60-120 days. Training is expensive and I understand
that. I have always felt that the breeders in this country do an outstanding job of producing a
great product, however, I think as trainers and owners we need to do a better job of develop-
ing that product and putting these horses in a position to reach their potential. That takes time
and it’s just human nature that we do what we have to to get by sometimes. Consequently,
at times, we tend to cheat on our riding. I have thrown my leg over close to 2000 different
horses in the past 30 years and I rarely have a horse in training that, if given the opportunity
to reach its potential, wouldn’t be great at something. I have always wondered how far I could
advance one of these two year olds if I was able to have them for a year prior to their juvenile
and futurity years as 3 and 4 year olds. This crop of colts will show the results of this experi-
ment and I think you will see how advanced these colts are for their age. If you are looking for
