Dear Cattlemen and Friends,
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013! Our cattle market is in a very good position right now, but it
could easily get much better! I believe the market is getting poised for the next step up
in the price ladder! 2012 was a record year of selling off of cull cows, leaving a much lower
nationwide female number and the lowest number most of us have seen in our lifetime. The
time is very near where the supply and demand of feeder cattle will have a hard time being
met! Be ready with the best sets of calves you can breed!
I have seen many sets of good, heavy Char-cross calves selling for over $1100. a head.
That makes for some big smiles on folks walking out of the sale barn with a nice check!
Cattle still sell by the pound, and the Charolais cross feeder cattle make pounds as fast
as any breed. Those dollars really multiply fast at these prices, and cattle feeders are
looking for those good char-cross calves, but they just can’t find enough of them! With
our low cow herd numbers nationwide, the supply of cattle will remain tight for some time,
offering us several years of very profitable cattle prices! I encourage you to buy your
bulls early this year and don’t get caught like many guys did last spring by the upsurge in
the cattle market in the spring, which in turn pushed bull prices to new highs. That could
easily happen again this year.
The year 2012 marks the 38th year for Sally and I in the purebred business. Our goals have not changed in all those years.
Our desire to produce superior quality breeding stock remains. In this bull sale, you will find our commitment to a standard of
excellence in each bull selling. This set of bulls will sire the feeder cattle that will be sold in the years 2014 and 2015. In the
last three years, we have undertaken an extensive AI program, allowing us to use several of top selling bulls of the Charolais and
Angus breeds in our herd. It has brought some new and exciting genetics for you to select from. I have to thank Sally and Randy
for the countless hours spent AI’ing cows, morning, noon and night. They are a couple of the best cow sorters ever!
In our sale this year, you will find significant genetic influence from many of the top AI sires in the breed. Also you will find a lot
of influence from Prime Up 981, a bull we have used heavily since he was a yearling. He has proven himself over and over to us by
doing things right each year. 981 calves good, his calves are strong at birth, his daughters make great cows, and his sons really
feed well for us. The old boy is homozygous polled, which really puts a nice head on his calves. If carcass is a concern for you,
981
has two Marbling Trait Leaders very close to him on both sides of his pedigree. Easy calving, gain, and carcass is all there in
981
bull calves and in his daughters!
Our focus with the Angus bulls is to not only provide some of the fastest growing genetics we can, but also to provide bulls that
will sire truly great cows for the new owners. We are very confident that our offering of Angus bulls will do just that this year.
The bulls in the sale are sired by some of the top selling bulls in the Angus breed. If you are in need of a top notch Angus bull,
please take a look, they will be a good buy!
We will again be offering a delayed payment plan this year, as we know our sale is early. With just Sally, Randy and me here to
do all the daily work, we have to sell either before or after calving. Early seems to work well as selling later would be during
most commercial ranches calving time. So, you have the option of paying 50% down on sale day and the balance when you pick up
your bull. We would like to have all the bulls to their new homes by April 1. Also, if you would be so willing, and we would be so
appreciative, bring your trailer and haul your bull home on sale day and receive a $25 discount on each bull purchased!
A Severance Charolais or Angus sire is the best way to add value to your herd. Total dollars spent, you get a more profitable
animal, from birth to sale day. It’s a business decision you can be proud to make at our annual Performance and Quality Bull Sale.
