Welcome to our 19th Annual Maine-Anjou bull
and female sale. I know many of you are in a
drought situation as we are in southeast South
Dakota. However, I look at it as an opportunity.
The easiest thing to do is spend more time with
our savior in prayer. The second, is costly and
not for everyone, but I’m feverishly trying to
get some irrigation permits, wells and systems
set up to ensure a constant supply of feed. The third opportunity is evaluating and culling
cows that are costing money, that have the occasional footnote in the calving book and those
that plain aren’t getting it done in production of pounds. I invite you to take advantage
of Maine-Anjou genetics in your herd bulls. Market those bulls that are just covering cows
and invest in the future with Maine genetics that provide calving ease, docility and strong
maternal traits. There are many breeds that can proclaim these attributes, but few that can
also provide performance traits, efficient ADG and powerful carcass characteristics of high
yields and heavy muscle without sacrificing marbling.
