- $SPB
New this fall, to assist our commercial bull buyers, is the $SPB index. This is a dollar value index developed by utilizing the grid pricing
structure used by Seminole Pride™ Beef to value carcasses going through their branded beef program. An index value of $0.00 represents
a bull that should sire calves that, on average, will have an average carcass weight with a Choice quality grade and Yield Grade 3. With this
valuation philosophy, and knowledge that packers are much more willing to discount than to add premiums, a $0.00 $SPB value is a good
thing. The individual values represent an expected average premium or discount per hundred weight of hot carcass weight. The chart below
shows the percentile rankings amongst the bulls offered in this sale.
With the explanation above, it is important to recognize that this is a terminal index. It is intended to better select sires in which ALL calves
will be sent though the feedlot. To fully capture the value represented by $SPB it is recommended to retain ownership of these calves to
realize the added carcass value.
This index, like most, makes selection easier because it takes many EPDs into account and combines them into a single selection value. This
makes it easier to select for cattle with the right combination of EPDs instead of inadvertently placing too much selection pressure on any one
trait. The components of this index are YW, REA, IMF, and FAT, so if $SPB fits your program needs and you choose to use it for selection, it is
important to not to put“extra”pressure on these individual EPDs since they are already considered.
If you are not looking for a terminal bull, $SPB can be used to keep carcass and growth in check while putting greater emphasis on the traits
that apply to your breeding program. Whether you need a calving ease sire or a bull to sire quality replacement heifers, $SPB is an easy tool
to keep balance in your breeding program while putting increased selection pressure in other areas.
If you are a producer with an interest in retaining ownership in your calves or utilizing this information to seek a premium from your feeder
calf buyer, make sure to pick up this information at the sale.
