Welcome to the fall 2017 Salacoa Valley Sale. My name is Dr. Brannon Rickman and
I am the herd veterinarian for Salacoa Valley and this fall’s sale veterinarian. We
at Murray County Veterinary Services have been providing care and treatment to
the Salacoa herd for over 25 years. During this time, many changes have occurred
including the beginning of the Brangus breeding program, the acquisition by the
Seminole Tribe of Florida, and culminating into the operation that is in place today
which produces some of the top Brangus in the breed. Salacoa employs a very capa-
ble and knowledgeable group of cattlemen that are led by Mr. Chris Heptinstall.
These cattlemen are very particular about biosecurity and herd health which lends
to cattle that are disease and problem free and ensures that buyers can purchase
with confidence in the quality of the livestock.
Vaccination protocols are central to the herd health program here at Salacoa. The
protocol consists of modified live vaccines against IBR, PI3, BRSV, BVD, 5-way Lepto,
and Vibrio (Campylobacter). Also utilized is an 8-way clostridial vaccine. All heifers
are calfhood vaccinated against Brucellosis between 4 and 12 months of age.
Cattle are also dewormed regularly and dewormers are rotated to prevent parasite
resistance. A high quality mineral mix is also provided at all times.
All bulls that are to be sold today have passed a semen quality check and breeding
soundness exam as outlined by the Society for Theriogenology. All bulls have been
screened for Tritrichomonas and have tested negative by both culture and PCR. All
bulls have also been screened for Johne’s disease through serologic testing. Any
bulls that returned with a positive result were then tested by fecal culture and
were found as not having any growth by the time of sale. All laboratory tests were
performed at the University of Georgia Diagnostic Laboratory in Tifton, GA.
Interstate health papers will also be provided on all sold cattle. These can be picked
up at the conclusion of the sale. I will also be available on sale day for any questions
you may have about Salacoa Valley’s herd health program.
Sincerely,
Brannon Rickman, D.V.M.
