Calving-ease is the result of several factors.
Studies indicate that the cow is roughly two-thirds
responsible for calving-ease and the sire about
one-third. Lighter birth weight is a factor along with
calving ease maternal, (CEM). We have selected
lighter birth weight, easy calving (CED) sires over
generations. Calving-ease in our bulls is, therefore,
a reliable and consistent feature. Environment
and nutrition can play a role in birth weights and
calving ease. Cold winters, as an example, result in
higher birth weights and more calving problems,
possibly from higher blood flow to the uterus to
maintain core temperature. Also excessive levels
of protein and energy in the cow’s diet during
gestation result in heavier calves at birth.
