Welcome to the 2013 Wagon Wheel Ranch Cattleman’s Connection Sale!
Dear Cattlemen-
2013 presents us with one of the most unique set of opportunities we’ve ever
been challenged with in the cattle industry. For cow-calf producers, numerous
articles point to calves bringing a good return and as Drovers magazine put it-
“cattle prices are likely to set more records in 2013 through 2014.” CattleFax states
in their long term outlook that the cow-calf segment will be the one segment of
the industry showing positive margins and that record high calf prices should
more than offset high input costs.
In another Drovers magazine article it says- “Angus calves at auction bring
record premiums according to Certified Angus Beef over other breeds of the same
weight class. If Angus calves continue to bring premiums, then Angus heifers
that would be going as replacements should be gaining in value to non Angus.”
Proving our herd has those traits, valued by feeders, is demonstrated by the
steers entered in the 2012 Yuma County Cattlemen’s feedlot performance trial.
Out of 94 entries, the 10 head of Wagon Wheel Ranch steers all graded choice -
where the entire pen averaged 35.1% choice, 63.8% select and 1.1% standard or
lower. In the gain portion of the trial, three Wagon Wheel Ranch steers finished
3rd, 4th and 5th. The remaining seven entries were all in the top 50% for gain.
Overall, a Wagon Wheel Ranch steer was the top entry in the contest which
combines gain and carcass to determine the most profitable steer entered. At the
end of the day, 7 checks for over $31,000 Calcutta payout for the Wagon Wheel
Ranch steers based on their performance.
This is what we aim our program towards, real world performance to deliver
consistent results. It all starts with the genetics and Wagon Wheel Ranch bulls
and heifers will carry on in the same manner as that fine group of steers did in
2012.
