ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECT AND EPDS
In a sale such as this, environment becomes more of a challenge since
these bulls have come out of several different programs. Each program
feeds a little differently and has different forage systems and bull feed-
ing programs. EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) are designed to
help eliminate the environment from the evaluation of the genetic differ-
ences. The actual weights only affect their EPDs from the standpoint of
their performance within a contemporary group. A contemporary group
is defined as a set of calves born and developed together to some end-
point. Wide-spread AI use of various “tie” bulls across the breed has
allowed these EPDs to become very accurate selection tools. EPDs have
been shown to be as much as nine times more accurate than ratios as a
selection tool, and ratios are still more accurate than actual measure-
ments. Recently, the option of adding genomic information to the EPDs
may increase the EPD accuracies even more.
