SPRING VALLEY COW HERD
Our cows are handled much like the commercial
cows in our area. Pasture from May to November,
stocks, either milo or corn, thru January then they
are taken to our calving pasture the first of
February down along the Solomon River, 10 miles
from our house. There, they are fed ground hay
(cane, prairie hay, alfalfa) with some silage. We
have calved down by the river for many years.
Other than when we have a very bad winter storm,
the cows are checked twice a day. Being that far
from the cows calving has taught us over the years
to be very selective which bulls we use for such
traits as calving ease, udder quality, and disposition.
