The American Angus Association has recently identified and is now offering a DNA test for the genetic condition called
Developmental Duplication or DD. It is simple recessive in its inheritance and very few affected animals have ever been
seen in the entire industry. In fact there have been a significant number of cattle that show no symptoms or negative affects
what so ever, even in the homozygous state. This condition can be effectively managed by strategic DNA testing and avoid-
ance of breeding carrier females to carrier bulls. To assist you with this we tested all potential carrier animals and printed
the results in the catalog as DDF for animals free of this condition and DDC for tested carriers. NCA stands for Non Carrier
Ancestry meaning the animal is free of this defect because of the DDF Free cattle that have been tested on both sides of its
pedigree.
This condition has only been found in cattle of Angus origin. Therefore DDC bulls can be used with no problem on any
cows that don’t have Angus in them. If you have Angus influenced cows that could potentially carry this gene, then just buy
bulls that are DDF or NCA. Those that do not have anything listed are animals that we found no potential carriers up close
in the pedigree.
Enhanced DNA technology is helping scientists identify more and more of these genetic conditions that are believed to
be found in all animals including humans. They are not new, just newly identified and with this information we can better
