• Denver Carload Bull.
We have been waiting a long time to raise
the right bull to give him the name “South Dakota.” He is about as
perfect as you could raise one. As we search the country looking
for herd bulls it is sometimes hard to look at their front feet and
rear leg structure. With “South Dakota” he is as sound, and good
footed as you can make one. He is clean fronted, has outstanding
depth with a lot of natural muscle. The next best thing about South
Dakota: he is stacked with the best cow family on the ranch, “Jilt.”
The dam, Jilt 539, is a donor that is a big-hipped Aberdeen daughter
with an excellent udder. The grandam raised the $19,000 Mohnen
Heartrate 1751 in last year’s sale to CRV who we sampled hard this
spring. 787 is a stout Brushpopper 353 that we will have calves by
this spring and is currently still being flushed. She has ratios of BR
3@104, WR 3@108, YR 3@109, IMF 2@100 and REA 2@99. South
Dakota also has the outstanding great-grandam Mohnen Jilt 1655
who is also a Pathfinder with production records of WR 4@107, YR
3@104 and an impressive REA ratio of 24@102. 1655 just sold half
interest in for $25,000 and has 35 daughters retained in the herd.
She is very massive and is as good as you can make any cow. She
sold the $16,000 Mohnen Hulk Y2181 to Rodney Rohde, NE and
Y2181 was leased to Genex. In the 2012 bull sale she sold 6 sons
for a $9,333 average. And last but not least, Mohnen Jilt 910, anoth-
er Pathfinder, the most prolific donor ever at Mohnen Angus, has
ratios of BR 6@98, WR 6@106, YR 5@103, IMF 103@105 and REA
103@99. Jilt 910 is the dam of the $39,000 Mohnen Dynamite 1356
(Genex), $20,000 Mohnen Day Ahead 144 (Genex), $17,000 Final
Answer son to Flesch Angus, MT and is also the dam of the sire of
“South Dakota,” Density 730. Jilt 910 has 25 daughters retained in
the herd. She has sold over $500,000 in progeny to date. Jilt 910

had eight bulls in the 2012 bull sale for an average of $9,312. Let’s
not forget to tell you that a half-sister to Jilt 910, Mohnen Jilt 1283,
has sons selling for $22,000 Mohnen Bingo 149, $9,000 Mohnen
Brushpopper 295 (Accelerated), $18,000 Mohnen Crown Royal
316 and Mohnen Wolf Creek 1849 to Topp Angus, ND for $17,000.
1283 had 9 sons that sold in the 2012 bull sale for $8,388. This
cow family is old originating from the Bon View cow herd. I could
keep going on but what I am trying to say that “South Dakota” has
as much herd bull potential as any bull ever raised here at Mohnen
Angus or maybe ever in South Dakota. We know he might not have
the fancy big spread but as you study the cow power above him it is
hard not to argue he will rise. He will be the hardest used young sire
at Mohnen Angus.
