Mohnen Angus
Dear Fellow Cattlemen:
We at Mohnen Angus would like to take this time to welcome
you to Mohnen Angus “Power of Genetics” bull sale. As I sit here and
write this letter we have been very busy on the ranch getting ready
for busy times ahead of calving, getting the sale book ready, clipping,
picture taking and preparing the bulls to the best of their ability so
they are ready for their new owners. All bulls will be freeze branded.
This year the Adjusted IMF and Adjusted REA will not be in the book.
With the bulls in the Denver Carload we did not want to carve into
them before that. We left boxes in the book so if you look at our website around the 25th of January or just give us a call we can fax or email you a copy so
you can enter them in the boxes left open.
This year in preparing our bulls, we did something different – we weaned them out on grass. Just check out the photo on the front cover. These bulls
are fed a high roughage ration developed by our nutritionist Daryl Thomas of J&R Feeds. Also something new this year: for the first time, we are taking
bulls out to the National Western Stock Show for the Angus Carload. We are excited to get this excellent set of bulls in front of thousands of cow-women
and men.
This year we are selling 30 registered cows and 20 outstanding registered heifer calves. We were going to have a fall female sale but decided to add
them to the Bull Sale. These are not the bottom end cows or heifers; they are just due to calve later. The heifer calves are some top heifer calves because
we already culled 30 off of the bottom end. One featured cow is Erianna 2576 who we feel is the most powerful cow to ever be sold from the Mohnen
Angus herd. 2576, a donor for us, is having calves being born this spring. She has already calved with a 77 lb. heifer calf to Basin Excitement. This is
the first heifer calf she has given us and will be one of the most valuable genetic pieces in the entire offering. Also we have cows by leading cow families
Emblynette, Abigale, Jilt, Pride, Zara, Young Lucy and Glyn Mawr Elba. We feel these females will go on and do an outstanding job for their new owners.
We are selling 25 outstanding commercial black heifers weighing around 1,200 lbs. all due March 1 to Mohnen Long Distance 1639. There will be four
two-year-old bulls selling also.
These are exciting times to be in the cattle business as we are hitting all-time highs. With times like these there is no reason to fall behind on your
genetic selection. As the world’s population grows we need to produce top notch cattle to keep up with the demand of beef and by doing this we need you
the customers to buy the best bulls available today. Remember pounds pay the bills and Mohnen Angus has the Power in the Genetics to help put them
pounds on to get more return on your investment. Once again you will have the opportunity to select full and half-brothers. We flushed some of the most
powerful cows in the Angus breed to help take our herd along with your herd to the next level. This allows you to buy brothers to help ensure a more
consistent calf crop from top to bottom. As you search the sale book you will find bulls with 100 lbs. and over birth weights. All calves get weighed on an
electronic scale, the same scale Bon View used. There is no trying to lift them up with a scale bouncing trying to read the weight and for sure no foot tape.
It is 100% accurate and the weights are what they are.
More exciting news at Mohnen Angus: Josh and Katie are expecting their third child sometime in May. The family is growing, and getting louder, but
we wouldn’t change it for the world. Josh and Katie have Koye, 4 1/2, Kade, 2 1/2, and Jenny and Ty have Jake, 4 1/2, and Hadley, 2 1/2. And yes Jared
and John are still having fun with the single life, no hurry though.
We hope to see you all sale day at the ranch in our heated sale barn. If you have any questions feel free to give us a call, “we love talking cattle.”
Remember, no question is a dumb one. If you are unable to make the sale, call us. We can help you out and we will not spend every dollar you allow us
unless needed, guaranteed!
The motto we stick by: “Raising Quality Cattle Is Not Our Job, It Is Our Life!”
Sincerely,
Mohnen Angus

COMMENTS FROM THE SALE MANAGER:
Mohnen Angus – Home of Pound-Heavy Seedstock
What a privilege and pleasure it is to visit the Mohnen Angus herd to see the powerful set of cattle that Steve and Kathy Mohnen and their family have bred
and developed. Angus cattle have been a way of life for this pioneer South Dakota Angus family, as performance and Aberdeen Angus goodness have been a
way of life.
If you are searching for cattle that blend Angus goodness and saleable pounds of Angus beef, study this sale offering carefully. 2013 marks the year that
Mohnen Angus will be exhibiting for the first time a Carload of Bulls at the 2013 National Western Stock Show. Recently I had the opportunity to see these
bulls and, believe me, I predict they will be real Denver eye openers.
Whether you are a purebred or commercial cattlemen, Mohnen Angus are bred with you in mind - profit, longevity and soundness.
A special feature of this year’s sale will be an outstanding group of Mohnen females, from the top cow families in the industry. They are sure to please.
Mohnen herd bulls can be found working in the major AI Studs of North America. One of the greatest tributes that can be paid to any breeding program is
to breed, raise and then use a bull that has been bred in your own program. This has become a regular occurrence at Mohnen Angus.
If you look at the 2013 sale offering, whether you are looking for powerful bulls or grand foundation females, don’t miss this exciting event from this
pioneer Angus family on February 8, 2013.
Sincerely,
Tom Burke
