SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
When you a r e conside r i ng pu r cha si ng cat t le what
are the most important traits you want for profitability?
Here are some of the traits we believe in:

Calving ease and birth weight (dead calves don’t make
much money).
*
Milk is important because we can’t starve a calf or have
so much milk the mother won’t breed back.
*
Weaning weight is also very important, especially to
those who sell weaning calves.
*
Yearling weight, of course, to sell your yearlings.
*
Rib eye size, marbling, and feed efficiency are very
important to those feeding cattle.
Some traits are not measured, but are just as important. What
about:
*
Feet and legs - they have to travel to eat and drink.
*
Udders - all the milk in the world does no good if a calf
can’t get it.
*
Disposition - you can’t sell them if you can’t even catch
them!
