Dear
Cattlemen and Cattlewomen,
Greetings and welcome from Hojer
Gelbvieh Ranch. It is hard to believe that we are
now in our 21st year with our production sale, Our
kids have grown up and we have our first grand
child. Time really flies. We are excited about the
offering that we are bringing to you this year. As
always, high performance, adequate calving ease
and a docile disposition have been recognized in
each and every animal in the offering.
As you grow with us, we continue to
change to meet the needs of the market that you
will be marketing your calves to. More than ever,
we have to be conscious of both the performance
in the feedlot and ultimately the performance at
the packing plant and the acceptance to the
consumer.
Normally I like to write an article with
each catalog. This year, the association has
implemented a “New EPD” system and I will be using the AGA’s explanation to help you understand the new numbers. For the most part, you need to
stretch your Birth Weight EPD parameters by at least 1 lb. The new system took all the BW EPDs up by around 1 pound. The cattle didn’t change but the
EPDs did. You will really like how the new Growth EPDs look and the cattle in the offering carry some of the Highest Growth EPDs in the country
today. The Calving Ease EPD (CE and DCE) really look different but as before, the larger the number the more the conversion to calving ease. Study the
information and please call with any questions.
Last year I mentioned that the only bad cow is an open cow. This is even more so this year. With the cattle numbers continuing to decline
because of the drought, we need to push hard to bring every possible calf to town. Not just for our profitability but to support our National Infrastructure.
We cannot afford to loose plants, sale barns or any infrastructure. Every time we do, we lose leverage in the market place. Beef is in Huge Demand today
and we are in the business of feeding the world. I believe our purpose is much greater than our local communities and we need to be as productive as
possible to continue to help feed the world. Make sure you have plenty of bull power because the only bad cow, is an open cow!!
Both Black and Red Genetics are being offered with a lot of strength in both the Purebred and the Balancer Groups. The heifers are right out of
our replacement pen and they offer a unique opportunity in itself as well as a unique service program that helps you manage your replacement needs.
As always, you are welcome to our ranch and we would love to talk cattle with you. The bulls and heifers will be at the yards in Huron on
March 2nd. See you on Monday, March 4th!! Alan & Pam, Blake and Jenn (Also Jace), Nikki & Michael, and Christian.
