After nearly 40 years of ranching in the harsh winters and
droughty summers of the North Dakota Badlands, with 100% of
our income derived from our cow-calf operation, we’ve learned
that it’s more important to have a smaller more efficient cow than
a larger heavy producing one.
The experiment stations and many seedstock breeders have
pushed and promoted production ahead of efficiency. If feed
grains stay high, efficient cattle are going to be in demand. To find
our best cows, we put them through the test. We make them go out
and rustle for a living, they winter graze with little supplemental
feed. Then the good ones rise to the top like cream. We don’t cheat
with extra feed, the cows will either winter and breed back or they
will get culled.
Three rules to stay in our herd: a cow has to breed back,
then she has to have a live calf and the calf has to be able to
suck without help. If she can’t do those three things, how much
she produces doesn’t matter. Remember if you have your faith in
God and your health, you are rich.
